Dedicated to keeping current on research and advancing knowledge in his field, Dr. Terry H. Clarke belongs to a number of professional organizations, including the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS), a United States professional medical society.

Founded in 1942, ACFAS claims more than 6,000 practicing podiatric foot and ankle surgeons today. The organization’s primary goal is to educate members on the latest advances and techniques in the area of foot, ankle, and related lower extremity care. In representing its members, ACFAS strives to advance and improve the educational and skill standards of care in this medical specialty.

Members of ACFAS consist of Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) who have graduated from one of the eight US podiatric medical schools that are accredited. Physician members must complete a surgical residency in podiatry for up to four years. The surgical board of foot and ankle surgeons, the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, certifies all Fellows of ACFAS.

The Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery, which was started in the 1960s, serves as ACFAS’ official publication, and the organization also provides a website for those interested in seeing a podiatric surgeon or finding out more about foot and ankle conditions. To view the website, go to

In the 1980s, the ACFAS established headquarters in San Francisco and developed special interest committees in areas such as biomaterials, arthroscopic surgery, and laser surgery. In the 1990s, the College celebrated its 50th anniversary, took its current moniker, introduced Preferred Practice Guidelines, and held a World Congress in the US and abroad to expand its international presence. In the 2000s, the ACFAS launched, a dedicated consumer website, and conducted its first multi-site clinical research project.

ACFAS members enjoy discounted prices to ACFAS educational events and resources; invaluable networking opportunities; assistance with licensure issues; practice-building tools; a subscription to the Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery, and other benefits.
